You may not know that before man came to Hawaii, there were only two mammals that would come on shore. The Hawaiian Monk Seal and the Hawaiian Bat. The only other large animal that was common to the shores before man is the Green Sea Turtle.
On Oahu, the other large "wild" animal in Oahu is the Hawaiian Wild Boar which was introduced by the Polynesians and is considered a destructive invasive species.

Monk seals are rare and endangered. Beach sightings are unusual, but in the three years we lived at Malaekahana, we saw them twice. Our guests on Christmas Eve 2010 were treated to the visit below.


Of course we have many other mammals in our waters. The most commonly seen would be Humpback Whales and Spinner Dolphins.
