The Island of Oahu is described among residents in typical Hawaiian terms. Here we speak in terms of leeward and windward coasts and mauka (mountain side) and makai (ocean side). The tradewinds brought the ancient Polynesians to Hawaii and those same winds define the weather, terrain and beaches of these islands. The tradewinds blow onto the windward side of the islands. Those tradewinds bring the life giving rain, and for that reason the windward side is a green and lush jungle. In contrast, by the time the winds cross over the jagged peaks that divide the windward side from the leeward side, there isn't much moisture remaining, leaving much drier terrain. All of the major Hawaiian islands have a lush-jungle side and a dry desert side.
On the windward coast of Oahu, only an hour's drive from the airport and Honolulu, you'll need to search 2,500 miles upwind for the nearest trace of civilization.
